It looks like a Plane Tree (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platanus). I'm not sure exactly where you are from, but here in australia the Plane Trees are everywhere along the streets and cause huge amounts of allergies, especially when they drop seeds. But I understand they are really common street trees throughout the world. The seeds are covered in small hairs which irritate the nose, throat, skin and eyes.

Here's a couple of articles about the allergies it can cause http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s1215645.htm and http://www.allallergy.net/fapaidfind.cfm?cdeoc=888

My mum has had a lot of problems with London plane trees too, they were planted all through London because they were one of the few trees that could survive all the soot and smog.
